The Liberation Mound — Kopiec Wyzwolenia — near Wrocław was constructed between 1934 and 1938 by Polish citizens hauling soil from battlefields where Polish forces fought during World War I, a deliberate act of collective memory in a country that had only regained independence in 1918 after 123 years of partition. The mound was intended to commemorate that independence, not a specific battle. Poland's interwar window closed brutally in September 1939, and the site fell into neglect under German occupation.
This coin was issued on the centenary of Polish independence, part of a broader NBP series revisiting monuments tied to that restoration.
