The Cistercian abbey at Paradyż was founded in 1230 and functioned continuously until the Prussian secularization edicts of 1835 forced the monks out. The complex subsequently passed through state and private hands before becoming a Catholic seminary in the twentieth century — an institution it still houses. This coin belongs to NBP's long-running series documenting Polish historic monuments, a program that has issued bimetallic fives since the mid-2000s with individual sites selected through consultation with the National Heritage Board.
