Schouwen-Duiveland issued this piece as part of the broader Dutch regional currency experiment that gained traction in the late 2000s, when several municipalities and island communities explored local exchange tokens as a way to anchor spending within depressed local economies. The ZeeCu — named after the Zeeland coastal identity — was never legal tender, functioning instead as a merchant-network voucher redeemable only within participating businesses on the island.

Uptake was modest, and the scheme folded within a few years.
