Provisional issues of the Banque du Zaïre were a stopgap measure during periods when new plate production lagged behind demand — older notes were overprinted or re-designated rather than replaced with fresh designs. The P#R3 designation places this firmly in regional or provisional issue territory, distinct from the main circulation series.
Giesecke & Devrient had a long relationship with Zaïre's central bank through this period, a decade marked by chronic inflation that ultimately rendered the zaïre nearly worthless before the 1993 introduction of the nouveau zaïre.
