Zheng Chenggong — known in Western sources as Koxinga — expelled the Dutch East India Company from Taiwan in 1662 after a nine-month siege of Fort Zeelandia, ending nearly four decades of Dutch colonial rule on the island. The PRC issued this coin as part of its broader 1990s series honoring historical figures with direct relevance to the Taiwan question, a transparent but historically grounded choice given that Zheng's campaign remains the foundational event in Chinese narratives about Taiwan's "return" to Chinese administration.
