Yunnan's 1919 gold issues were produced under Tang Jiyao, the warlord-governor who dominated the province after helping suppress the short-lived Hongxian Empire of Yuan Shikai. The "Support the Republic" inscription was less a civic declaration than a political one — Tang used such coinage to project legitimacy and fund military operations during a period when Yunnan operated with near-total autonomy from Beijing.
The '2' privy mark distinguishes this piece within a series struck in multiple numbered varieties, likely denoting a specific die pairing or production batch. Yunnan's mint records from this era are fragmentary at best.
