Obverse description The national emblem of the People's Republic of China occupies the central field, depicting Tiananmen Gate surmounted by five stars and encircled by sheaves of grain with a cogwheel at the base. The Latin transliteration of the issuing authority, ZHONGHUA RENMIN GONGHEGUO, arcs along the upper periphery, while the Chinese characters 中华人民共和国 are inscribed in the lower field. The date 1999 appears in the exergue beneath the emblem.

Reverse description A highly detailed naturalistic depiction of a Chinese Sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis) dominates the central field, shown in profile with a second smaller sturgeon in the background, rendered with fine engraved detail including characteristic scutes and barbels. Stylized water ripples appear in the upper portion of the field behind the fish. The denomination 5元 is inscribed to the right in the field. The Chinese legend 中国珍稀野生动物—中华鲟, meaning 'China's Rare Wild Animals — Chinese Sturgeon', runs along the upper periphery.
