Reverse description The reverse presents a finely detailed scene celebrating the ancient Chinese art of silk production. In the foreground, a seated female figure dressed in traditional Han-dynasty robes tends to a silk-reeling apparatus, drawing thread with both hands from a vessel at her right; a wooden reel frame is depicted in the left middle ground. In the background, a second figure operates a spinning wheel beside a stand hung with silk skeins. Mulberry leaves are rendered in the lower exergue, symbolic of sericulture. The denomination 5元 appears in the right field in Chinese characters, while the legend 缫丝 (silk reeling) is inscribed in Chinese at the upper field.
