Part of China's long-running Silk Road commemorative series, the 1996 issues were produced while Beijing was actively cultivating diplomatic and trade relationships across Central Asia following the Soviet collapse — a context that made the ancient overland routes politically resonant for the first time in decades. The series drew enough international collector attention that secondary market premiums outpaced issue price almost immediately.
