The People's Bank of China was established on 1 December 1948, and the notes issued in those first months were produced under genuinely chaotic conditions — multiple printing facilities, inconsistent paper stocks, and a civil war still actively determining which territory would actually use them. Whether this specific piece is a contemporary replica made for educational or display purposes, or a later facsimile reproduction, matters considerably to its catalog placement; a 1948–49 PBoC note described as a "replica" should not be valued or treated as an issued original.
Authentic first-series PBoC 5 Yuan notes are scarce in any grade.
