Beschrijving voorzijde A finely detailed rendering of a section of the Great Wall of China occupies the central field, depicting the crenellated battlements and watchtower ascending rocky terrain, with trees visible in the lower foreground. The national name in Chinese characters, 中华人民共和国, arcs along the upper border within a raised rim. The date 1995 is inscribed in the lower exergual area in Arabic numerals. The overall design is executed in high relief against a mirror-like proof field, conveying the monumental grandeur of the ancient fortification.

Beschrijving keerzijde The central design features a full-length figure of a Dan role performer from Peking Opera, elaborately costumed in traditional theatrical dress with an ornate headdress adorned with pheasant feathers and holding a sword, depicted mid-performance. To the right of the principal figure, two smaller musician figures are shown in a seated and standing posture, playing traditional instruments. To the left, a Chinese legend in three lines reads 京剧艺术(旦角)始于公元十八世纪, identifying the subject as the Dan role of Peking Opera originating in the 18th century. The denomination 5元 appears in the upper right field. The design is rendered in fine proof relief against a polished background.

Aanvullende informatie

The Peking Opera silver series, issued across several years in the 1990s, was part of a broader push by Chinese state mints to court international collector markets during a period when China was aggressively expanding its numismatic export program. The 1995 installment continued the rotating cast of operatic character types drawn from the classical repertoire, each year's selection approved through the China Mint's design committee rather than open competition.

Coins from this run were struck at the Shenyang Mint. Proof examples were sold primarily through overseas distributors, and domestic circulation was never the intent.
