Taiwan's Central Engraving and Printing Plant produced lottery-tied banknotes for the Bank of Taiwan through much of the 1950s and 1960s, a scheme designed to encourage savings and generate government revenue simultaneously. The "Patriotic Lottery" series embedded serial numbers that doubled as lottery ticket numbers — holders could win cash prizes without surrendering the note, which remained legal tender regardless of outcome.
Issue 240 falls well into the mature phase of the program, by which point the lottery mechanism was thoroughly routine rather than novel. Redemption records from this period suggest relatively high survival rates — the prize incentive gave people reason to hold rather than spend.
