Obverse description A frontal view of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (Qinian Dian) at the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, rendered in fine relief against a mirror-like field. The triple-tiered circular structure with its distinctive conical roof rises prominently in the center, approached by a broad ceremonial stairway. The Chinese legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs along the upper periphery, while the date 1984 appears in the lower exergue.

Reverse description A giant panda seated in a relaxed posture occupies the central field, depicted holding and nibbling on a sprig of bamboo with foliage extending toward the upper right. The naturalistically rendered animal is portrayed with fine detail on its characteristic black-and-white markings. The legend 五洲金币总公司 (China National Gold Corporation) curves along the lower left, with 成色.999 and 1/20OZ Au inscribed along the upper periphery, and the denomination 5元 appearing to the right in the field.
