This piece belongs to the 1984 Chinese Historical Figures series, a four-coin set issued to mark the 35th anniversary of the People's Republic. The "Officer" subject draws from the pre-imperial military tradition, part of a deliberate curatorial choice to present Chinese civilization as a continuous thread — a politically loaded framing at a moment when the PRC was actively rehabilitating classical culture after the Cultural Revolution's sustained assault on it.
