| Reverse description | The reverse presents a three-quarter standing effigy of Lin Zexu, the celebrated Qing dynasty statesman and anti-opium Commissioner, rendered in traditional official court robes with queue, facing slightly left and holding a scroll. In the left middle ground, a group of workers are depicted destroying opium chests, evoking the historic destruction of confiscated opium at Humen in 1839. Foreign sailing vessels are visible on the sea in the upper left background. The legend 林则徐 公元1785-1850年 arcs along the upper border in Chinese characters and Arabic numerals, while the denomination 5元 appears in the lower left field. |
