Obverse description The obverse features the national emblem of the People's Republic of China prominently centered in the copper-nickel inner disc, depicting Tiananmen Gate surmounted by five stars and encircled by a wreath of grain ears and a cogwheel at the base. The circular legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) runs along the upper periphery of the brass outer ring in simplified Chinese characters. Decorative peony blossoms flank the lower portion of the emblem in the field. The date 2001 appears in the lower exergue beneath the emblem.
