Issued as part of China's early commemorative program, this coin marks the 35th anniversary of the People's Republic — the first major commemoration series China produced for the international collector market following the country's reopening to foreign trade. The mintage was tightly controlled, with most examples exported rather than entering domestic circulation, as ordinary Chinese citizens had little access to hard currency purchases in 1984.
