Huangmei opera originated in the rice-growing regions straddling Hubei and Anhui provinces, developing from folk harvest songs before migrating to urban stages in the early twentieth century. It remains one of China's five major operatic traditions, though it never achieved the institutional prestige of Peking opera and has historically struggled for central government funding.
