Reverse description A detailed portrait of Kublai Khan (忽必烈), founder of the Yuan Dynasty, dominates the right-center field, depicted in full armour with an elaborate crested helmet, rendered in high relief against a mirror proof field. Behind him, armoured attendants bearing a ceremonial parasol and standards are visible in the middle ground, while an imperial palace complex is depicted in low relief to the left. The denomination 5元 appears in the left field in large numerals and Chinese characters. The inscription 忽必烈 公元 1215–1294年 arcs around the upper periphery in Chinese characters and Arabic numerals, recording the subject's name and life dates. An ornate balustrade rendered in fine detail forms the lower foreground.
