| Obverse description | Central design features a finely detailed frontal elevation of the main ceremonial gate of Putuoshan (Mount Putuo), a sacred Buddhist island and pilgrimage site off the coast of Zhejiang province, rendered in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field. The multi-tiered traditional Chinese architectural structure is depicted with characteristic upswept eaves and three arched passageways. The legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) curves along the upper periphery in Chinese characters, while the inscription 普陀山 (Putuoshan) appears below the gate, with the date 1997 beneath it. |
