Reverse description The reverse presents a richly composed scene commemorating the first recorded observation of a comet in ancient China, circa 2000 BCE. In the right-center field, a robed scholar in traditional Han-dynasty attire gazes skyward alongside a younger attendant who points upward toward a streaking comet depicted in the upper left, its tail rendered in flowing lines against a night sky with a crescent moon and stars. In the background upper left, a group of three ancient observers similarly gestures toward the celestial phenomenon, while a stylized pagoda and foliage appear in the upper right field. To the left, the Chinese inscriptions 首次发现彗星 (First Discovery of a Comet) and 公元前2000年 (2000 BCE) are incused in the field, with the denomination 5元 appearing to the right.
