The Bank of China was established in February 1912, days after the Qing abdication, as a reorganization of the old Qing dynasty's Hu Pu Bank. This note belongs to the earliest issues under that new identity — printed by the American Bank Note Company in New York, a common arrangement for Chinese republican-era notes given the absence of a capable domestic security printer at the time.
The dual denomination — "Yuan" in Chinese, "Dollars" in English — reflects the period's monetary ambiguity, when the Mexican silver dollar still circulated alongside the nascent republican currency in treaty ports and foreign-trade zones.
