Reverse description At centre, a finely modelled recumbent deer — rendered after an ancient Chinese bronze artefact — is depicted in high relief, its elongated, branching antlers rising dramatically upward into the upper field. Flanking the antlers, a Chinese inscription arcs across the field in two columns reading 公元前476 on the left and 一朝221 on the right, indicating the historical period (476–221 BC, the Warring States period) from which the original bronze artifact originates. The denomination 5元 is inscribed in Chinese characters at the lower centre of the field. The reverse is struck to proof standard with a deeply contrasting frosted device against a mirror-polished field.
