The Bank of Central China was a Communist Party institution established in 1945 to manage currency in the liberated zones of central China — specifically the areas controlled by the New Fourth Army. This 5 Yuan note belongs to the immediate postwar period when the CCP was rapidly expanding its monetary infrastructure across contested territories, partly to compete with and undercut Nationalist currency in the same regions.
The Pick S-prefix designation places this firmly in the regional/special issues category, and surviving examples in any condition are genuinely uncommon — wartime and civil-war-era Communist zone notes were not systematically preserved, and redemption after 1949 standardization consumed large quantities.
