Obverse description A detailed high-relief depiction of a fortified watchtower section of the Great Wall of China occupies the central field, rendered with fine architectural and landscape detail including crenellated battlements, stone ramparts descending across mountain ridges, and sparse vegetation in the lower left. The Chinese legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs along the upper periphery in bold Chinese characters. The date 1997 appears in large Arabic numerals along the lower rim.

Reverse description An acrobatic performer is depicted in dynamic mid-motion, arched backwards atop a low table, simultaneously spinning multiple plates on long sticks held aloft in both hands and feet. Additional acrobatic figures appear in the upper left field in smaller relief, suggesting sequential movement. The Chinese inscription 古代杂技 始于公元前206年 (Ancient acrobatics, originating from 206 BC) appears in two lines to the left of center. The denomination 5元 is inscribed in Chinese characters at the right field.
