Issued to mark the PLA's 90th anniversary in 2017, this coin is part of a multi-piece commemorative set covering the Army, Navy, and Air Force branches — a format the People's Bank of China has returned to repeatedly for military anniversaries since the 1990s. The PLA Navy in 2017 was undergoing its most significant expansion in decades, commissioning its first domestically built aircraft carrier that same year.
