Changchun Film Studio was founded in 1945 on the infrastructure of the Manchukuo Film Association, a Japanese propaganda operation established during the occupation. After the Communist victory in 1949, it became the first state-owned studio of the People's Republic and produced some of the most-watched films in Chinese history, including the 1963 revolutionary classic Lei Feng. By the 1980s it had fallen behind the newer studios in Beijing and Shanghai, though it remained the dominant producer of dubbed foreign films for the domestic market for decades.
