The Changchun Film Studio, established in 1945 in what had been a Japanese puppet-state production facility in Manchukuo, became the first major state-owned film studio of the People's Republic after 1949. It produced China's first feature film under the new government, Bridge, in 1949, and its early output was instrumental in shaping socialist realist cinema during the Mao years. The studio's significance in the official cultural narrative made it a natural subject for a commemorative issue on its seventieth anniversary.
