China hosted the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai in October 2007 — the first time the event was held in Asia. The decision to issue a commemorative coin series was partly diplomatic, aimed at softening international attention ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when scrutiny of Chinese domestic policy was intensifying.
KM#1826 is one of several pieces from this release. Mintage figures for the series were modest by Chinese commemorative standards, and many went directly into collector sets rather than general distribution.
