Issued to mark Hong Kong's return to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, this coin was part of a wave of commemorative silver released by the People's Bank in the months following the handover. The 1998 expo it commemorates was staged in Hong Kong specifically to demonstrate the city's continued commercial vitality under the "one country, two systems" framework — a political message as much as a trade event.
