This note belongs to the second series of Renminbi, introduced from 1955 onward as the government replaced the first series at a rate of 10,000 old yuan to 1 new yuan — a drastic redenomination aimed at stabilizing an economy still recovering from civil war inflation. The Beijing Banknote Printing Factory had only recently come online as China's primary security printer, reducing dependence on Soviet technical assistance that had propped up earlier production runs.
The watermark remains the sole mechanical security feature, modest by international standards of the period but consistent across the second series. Notes from this issue circulated well into the 1960s before the third series began its gradual replacement.
