Obverse description A vignette of the Kitano Tenmangu shrine occupies the left-centre, rendered in fine intaglio line work against a multicolour guilloche underprint in orange and green. To the right, an intaglio portrait of Sugawara no Michizane in court dress faces left. The imperial chrysanthemum seal appears at top centre, the denomination 五圓 is set within a central cartouche, and a red two-character Heigo (兵後) overprint is applied across the face; the issuing authority legend 大日本帝國政府 runs across the top, with the printer's imprint along the lower border.
