| Obverse description | A vignette of the Kitano Tenmangu shrine occupies the left-centre, rendered in fine intaglio line work against a multicolour guilloche underprint in orange and green. To the right, an intaglio portrait of Sugawara no Michizane in court dress faces left. The imperial chrysanthemum seal appears at top centre, the denomination 五圓 is set within a central cartouche, and a red two-character Heigo (兵後) overprint is applied across the face; the issuing authority legend 大日本帝國政府 runs across the top, with the printer's imprint along the lower border. |

| Reverse description | The reverse is printed in olive-brown and dark brown, centred on an elaborate guilloche rosette of interlocking floral lobes enclosing the numeral 5. Symmetrical ornamental scrollwork flanks the central vignette, with kanji denomination panels 圓 at left and right. A red Heigo overprint is visible across the centre. The inscription 5 YEN appears in Roman lettering along the lower margin, and a small circular emblem surmounts the design at top centre. |
