The Bank of Japan title in kanji appears to the left, with a red seal below it, and the denomination in kanji characters to the right; a chrysanthemum imperial crest is positioned at the top centre within an ornate guilloche border. Numeral '5' corner pieces and a horizontal text panel with legal tender inscription in Chinese characters appear along the lower margin. |

| 裏面の説明 | Printed in red-orange on a pale cream ground, the reverse is dominated by two large circular guilloche rosettes each enclosing the numeral '5' and '5' in mirror form, linked by an intricate lathe-work underprint. The legend 'NIPPON GINKO' appears in large roman lettering across the top, with the promise clause 'Promises to Pay the Bearer on Demand' immediately below and 'Five Yen IN GOLD.' centred in bold script. Japanese text columns appear along both vertical margins and in horizontal bands across the lower portion, with decorative floral cornerpieces and two round seals at the bottom corners. |
