正面描述 Vignette of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine at centre-left, set against a mountain landscape with trees rendered in fine intaglio engraving. To the right, an intaglio portrait of Sugawara no Michizane in court robes and traditional eboshi cap. The large kanji denomination 五圓 is centred, with the Bank of Japan title 日本銀行兌換券 along the top, imperial chrysanthemum seal at upper centre, and a red official seal below the shrine vignette.

背面描述 Executed in deep mauve-brown tones, the reverse is dominated by two large lobed guilloche medallions at left and right, each bearing a kanji denomination character — 圓 and 五 respectively — set within intricate lathe-work underprint. The English denomination "5 YEN" appears at lower centre, flanked by two red circular official seals. The Bank of Japan title in kanji runs across the upper portion, with a small circular device at top centre.

备注

Japan's wartime print runs accelerated sharply after 1941 as military expenditure and occupation-zone financing created sustained inflationary pressure. This note belongs to a period when the Cabinet Printing Bureau was operating under severe material constraints — paper quality declined noticeably across the 1942–1944 series, and many surviving examples show brittleness inconsistent with age alone.

Pick 43 is among the more common wartime Japanese issues, but condition survivorship is poor precisely because the paper was substandard at manufacture.
