The Sino-Korean Friendship Tower in Pyongyang was built in 1959 to commemorate Chinese People's Volunteer Army soldiers killed during the Korean War — an estimated 180,000 Chinese dead by most counts, a figure the DPRK has always had political reasons to honor publicly. This brass commemorative was issued the same year North Korea quietly redenominated its currency relationship with foreign hard currency, making most circulating commemoratives of the period effectively decorative from the outset.
