Issued to mark fifty years since the end of Japanese colonial rule, which the DPRK dates from August 15, 1945 — a date the regime calls Kwangbok, or "restoration of light." North Korea's commemorative coinage program expanded significantly through the 1990s, almost entirely for foreign export and hard currency collection rather than domestic circulation. Most pieces never entered the North Korean economy at all.
