South Korea's brass 5 Won replaced an earlier cupro-nickel version as part of a broader rationalization of the coinage in the early 1970s. The shift to brass reflected both cost pressures and the practical realities of a rapidly industrializing economy that was consuming base metals at an extraordinary rate. Low-denomination coins of this period circulated heavily and survivors in uncirculated condition are scarcer than mintage figures suggest.
