In 1875, Venezuela was actively negotiating the design and specifications for a new silver coinage under President Antonio Guzmán Blanco, whose modernization agenda included overhauling the national currency along European lines. Pattern pieces from this period were struck in white metal — a tin or antimony alloy used as a low-cost substitute for silver during die trials — allowing engravers and government officials to evaluate hub and die quality without committing bullion. Uniface trials in particular were produced to assess the working die for a single face in isolation, divorced from the engineering complications of a two-sided strike.
The 5 Venezolanos denomination was ultimately short-lived in regular issue.
