| Obverse description | Central field features a wreath of laurel branches encircling the denomination numeral '5' below the national initials 'U.S.' in large raised letters. Three pellets separate the numeral from the initials within the wreath. The peripheral legend reads LIBERTAS • JUSTITIA, flanking the upper arc, with the date 1783 appearing in the lower arc between two dots. The coin is struck within a milled border of fine beading. The design, engraved by Benjamin Dudley, reflects the proposed decimal coinage system advocated by Gouverneur Morris for the nascent United States. |
