COMAL — the Coordinadora de Comercialización Alternativa — is a Honduran fair-trade network that developed its own internal scrip as part of a parallel local exchange system operating outside the formal banking sector. The Udi functions as a community currency unit, used among member cooperatives to facilitate trade without dependence on the lempira or external credit structures. These notes circulate within a defined network rather than the open economy, which makes their survival in collector hands a matter of chance rather than design.
