Additional information

The Battle of Sisak in June 1593 is considered one of the most consequential engagements in Habsburg-Ottoman relations — the first significant Ottoman defeat in the region after decades of relentless expansion, and the opening battle of the Long Turkish War. Slovenia's decision to commemorate it on a circulating coin issued just two years after independence reflects a deliberate effort to anchor the new state's identity in a pre-Yugoslav, Central European historical narrative. The 400th anniversary fell in 1993, the same year of issue.
