| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square border, with four bold Chữ Hán (Chinese character) legends arranged in the four cardinal positions around the hole. Reading clockwise from the top: 紹 (Thiệu) above, 通 (Thông) to the right, 治 (Trị) below, and 寶 (Bảo) to the left, together forming the reign title inscription 紹治通寶 (Thiệu Trị Thông Bảo). The characters are rendered in a bold, fluid script on a plain, unadorned field, enclosed within a raised circular rim. The overall design follows the traditional Vietnamese cash-coin format of the Nguyễn dynasty. |

| Reverse description | Central square perforation with a raised square border, flanked by four Chữ Hán characters in the four cardinal positions around the hole. Reading clockwise from the top: 富 (Phú, wealth) above, 多 (Đa, abundance) to the right, 壽 (Thọ, longevity) below, and 男 (Nam, male heirs) to the left, together forming the auspicious four-character phrase 富多男壽 (Phú Đa Nam Thọ), meaning 'wealth, abundance, male heirs, and longevity.' The deeply incised characters are executed in a bold brushwork style on a smooth, unadorned field, enclosed within a raised circular rim consistent with Nguyễn dynasty gold coinage. |

| Additional information |
Thiệu Trị, the fourth emperor of the Nguyễn dynasty, reigned for only six years before dying of illness in 1847 — a brevity that constrains the total output of his gold coinage considerably. The Imperial Vietnamese Mint at Huế operated under strict court control, producing these pieces less as circulating currency than as instruments of imperial ritual, gift-giving, and tributary exchange with the Qing court.
Fr#15a distinguishes this from the more common Fr#15 by a die variation documented in Franc's reference — collectors should verify the specific punch characteristics rather than relying on weight alone to differentiate the two.
