Thiệu Trị reigned for just seven years before dying of illness in 1847, making his coinage among the shorter-lived series of the Nguyễn dynasty. The 5 Tiền denomination sat at the upper tier of the silver coinage structure established under Gia Long and refined by Minh Mạng, and issues from Thiệu Trị's reign were struck at the imperial mint in Huế under conditions of tightening state finances — his reign coincided with the early pressures of French missionary activity and the coastal tensions that would eventually invite direct military intervention under his successor Tự Đức.
