Thiệu Trị reigned for just six years before dying at 37, making his coinage among the shorter-lived issues of the Nguyễn dynasty. The 5 Tiền denomination was part of a bimetallic weight system anchored to the quan, with silver pieces like this one occupying a middle register of everyday commerce that copper cash strings could not efficiently handle. Thiệu Trị's reign saw continued friction with French naval incursions along the southern coast — pressures that would accelerate sharply under his successor Tự Đức.
