Obverse description The obverse displays four large Chữ Hán (Chinese) characters arranged in the cardinal positions of the field, reading 嗣德通寶 (Tự Đức Thông Bảo), denoting the reign title of Emperor Tự Đức and the standard cash coin formula meaning 'current treasure.' At the centre of the field, a stylised flaming sun or fireball motif is rendered in low relief, its radiating tendrils extending outward in a dynamic, symmetrical composition. The characters are boldly engraved in a formal script style consistent with Vietnamese imperial coinage of the Nguyễn dynasty. The coin exhibits a plain raised rim enclosing the entire design.
