Obverse description Bare-headed effigy of Grand Duke Paul Frederick of Mecklenburg-Schwerin facing right, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair. The portrait is unadorned and of a neoclassical style typical of German states coinage of the period. The circular legend reads PAUL FRIEDR GROSSHERZOG V MECKLENBURG SCHWERIN, arranged around the periphery of the coin with a beaded border.

Reverse description Elaborate crowned coat of arms of Mecklenburg-Schwerin displayed at centre, supported by mantling draped to either side, the shield quartered with multiple heraldic charges including a bull, a cross, and an eagle. The denomination FÜNF THALER appears divided on either side of the crowned arms in the upper field, with the date 1840 in the exergue below. A beaded border frames the entire design.
