Obverse description Armored and helmeted half-length effigy of Duke Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel facing slightly right, holding a battle-axe in his right hand and resting his left hand upon the hilt of a sword. The figure is framed by two concentric decorative circles: the innermost ring bearing personifications and symbols of the seven planets, and the second ring displaying the signs and symbols of the zodiac. The date 1588 appears within the legend. The surrounding inscription, rendered in Latin and German, identifies the issuer and invokes a pious sentiment regarding divine providence.
