The Bishopric of Hildesheim occupied an awkward political position in the mid-eighteenth century, sandwiched between Hanover and Prussia and perpetually subject to territorial pressure from both. Frederick William of Westfalen served as prince-bishop from 1763, taking the see just as the Seven Years' War concluded — a conflict that had left the surrounding region economically devastated and the bishopric's minting activity sharply curtailed. This 1765 issue came early in his episcopate, part of a resumption of prestige coinage once the immediate postwar disruption had passed.

The Pistole denomination places this firmly in the tradition of gold multiples struck more for display and diplomatic gift-giving than everyday exchange.
