Frederick August I received his royal title directly from Napoleon in December 1806, the same month Saxony joined the Confederation of the Rhine. The elevation from Elector to King was entirely a French gift, and this coinage — authorized almost immediately — reflects that new status. Saxony had been an electorate since the Golden Bull of 1356; the jump to kingdom happened overnight.
The Albertinian line had controlled the Dresden mint continuously since the partition of 1485, and the 1806 upgrade in titulature required a wholesale revision of the coinage hierarchy. The 5 Thaler denomination in gold sat at a deliberately awkward value, more useful as a presentation or gift piece than in everyday commerce.
